USA Baseball Junior National Team Trials Scheduled American Legion Baseball Players Invited Comprised of the nation's top high school players, the USA Baseball Junior National Team is a perennial power on the international baseball scene. In the 22-year history of the IBAF World Junior Championship, the United States has produced a record 21 medals. This year’s Junior National Team will try to win its sixth gold medal at the World Junior Championships in Edmonton, Canada, July 25 – August 3. As a means to select players for the Junior National Team, USA Baseball uses the Tournament of Stars as the Junior National Team trials. This tournament is where the top 144 high school-aged players in America vie for one of 18-20 spots on the USA Baseball Junior National Team. The tournament is a comprehensive event that also serves as a national all-star competition and player showcase. The Tournament of Stars will be held in Cary, North Carolina, June 16 – 23 where USA Baseball opened its new National Training Center earlier this year. The 144 players invited to the event will travel to Cary and participate cost-free through the support of Major League Baseball. Up to 32 players will be selected following the tournament. Through a series of intersquad games and exhibition games, USA Baseball will select its 2008 USA Baseball Junior National Team. Distinguished alumni of past Junior National Teams include Major Leaguers Paul Konerko, Mike Mussina, Alex Rodriguez, and John Smoltz. Also included are recent #1 Overall Picks in the Major League Draft - Joe Mauer (2001), Delmon Young (2003), Matt Bush (2004), Justin Upton (2005), and Luke Hochevar (2006). The 2005 AL Rookie of the Year Huston Street played in the 2001 Tournament of Stars. American Legion Baseball is a National Member Organization of USA Baseball. Each year, an American Legion all-star team is among the eight teams invited to compete in the USA Baseball Tournament of Stars. The American Legion always fields a strong team at the Tournament of Stars, and hopes to do so again in 2008. “This competition is very good,” acknowledged Jim Quinlan, National Program Coordinator for American Legion Baseball. “We are looking for top notch players in high school that will be D-1 players.” Uvalde standout Brooks Raley represented Texas on the 2007 Legion All Star squad.
